How often should you use a hair mask?

Once a week, with the cases that move it. And the reason this one is easy to answer and hard to keep up with.

Once a week

Once a week is the default nearly every brand and stylist starts people on, then adjusts. It is one of the few items here where doing it more is not automatically better.

What changes it

The single number is the part everyone quotes and the part that is least useful. These are the cases that move it.

IfThen
Dry or damaged2 to 3 times a week
Curly or coily1 to 2 times a week
Fine hairOnce a week, lightweight formula
Oily scalpEvery other week

Why this one drags

This is the bottle you bought and used twice. Nothing goes visibly wrong when you skip it, so there is no feedback loop, and an item with no feedback loop needs a date on it or it simply stops happening.

Which is worth saying plainly, because it is not a memory problem and it is not a discipline problem. An interval measured in weeks has nowhere to live in an ordinary week. Nothing in your Tuesday reminds you that it has been five of them.

What else is due around now

Upkeep on a similar clock, so you can batch the booking instead of doing this one in isolation.

UpkeepHow often
Sheet Wash DayOnce a week
Nail FillEvery 2 to 3 weeks
Root Touch-UpEvery 4 to 6 weeks

See the full upkeep schedule, which has every interval on one page.

Stop tracking it yourself

You now know the number. The number was never the hard part. In a week you will be somewhere else, thinking about something else, and nothing will remind you.

What this looks like as a text it's sunday, time to use a hair mask.

Or you could just have someone keep track

Hair Mask Day is one of 30 things Remi runs. She texts you every Sunday morning, you reply, and she keeps track of the rest. No app to open, nothing to log.
