How often should you touch up your roots?

Every 4 to 6 weeks, with the cases that move it. And the reason this one is easy to answer and hard to keep up with.

Every 4 to 6 weeks

Four to six weeks covers single-process color on most people. The number moves a long way in both directions depending on what is actually growing out, which is the part most answers leave off.

What changes it

The single number is the part everyone quotes and the part that is least useful. These are the cases that move it.

Why this one drags

You do not notice roots in the mirror, because you see them a little more every day. You notice them in a photograph, and by then they are about three weeks past due. There is no daily cue for a six-week interval, which is the whole problem.

Which is worth saying plainly, because it is not a memory problem and it is not a discipline problem. An interval measured in weeks has nowhere to live in an ordinary week. Nothing in your Tuesday reminds you that it has been five of them.

So the reminder that matters is not the one on the day it is due. It is the one about 2 weeks before, while there is still an appointment left to book.

What else is due around now

Stop tracking it yourself

You now know the number. The number was never the hard part. In about 4 to 6 weeks you will be somewhere else, thinking about something else, and nothing will remind you.

What this looks like as a text heads up, you're coming due to touch up your roots. want me to find you somewhere with a saturday left?

Or you could just have someone keep track

Root Touch-Up is one of 30 things Remi runs. She texts you every Tuesday morning, you reply, and she keeps track of the rest. No app to open, nothing to log.
